Half-Case Red
2006 Medusa Old Vine Zinfandel Hoodoo Creek Vineyard Lake County - Many of you know that I have a vendetta against the winemakers who tried to ruin America's first great wine, Zinfandel. This wine reflects the old school classic Zins that are balanced, evenly ripe, moderately spicy and elegant. This full-bodied red will improve for 5-7 years and mirror the complexity of a Bordeaux while maintaining the unique qualities that make Zin special. It is a perfect match for rack of lamb.
2006 Dry Creek Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Dry Creek - The very first wine dinner I hosted featured Dry Creek Vineyards. Its wines have always been excellent values and this Cabernet illustrates this trait. Medium to full-bodied, it is smooth with black fruit, cassis, fig and plum flavors with a touch of smoky oak. It has my favorite feature, balance! Versatile, it goes with any meat dish and worked great with beef Bourgogne for me.
2009 Masi Tupungato Malbec Corvina Mendoza Argentina - Some wines are just pure fun and this is certainly falls into that category. It is an unusual blend of Argentina's favorite grape, Malbec, and one of the grapes used to make Valpolicella and Amarone. It is rich, spicy, blackberry and sexy. We all just loved it when we tasted it. It was wonderful with grilled flanksteak with a mushroom sauce. This is a real winner!
2006 Abbaye De Saint Ferme "Les Vignes du Soir" Bordeaux Superieur - I have sold this wine off and on since I started 20 years ago because it is a consistent value. It is a Merlot based Bordeaux that is made from better vineyards with older vines even though it is value priced. It sees no noticeable oak and is just silky smooth with black cherry, plum, licorice and mushroom flavors. It has an almost clean finish. This is a rare tuna or poultry red.
2008 Orin Swift "The Prisoner" Napa Valley - Damn we're good. This is a blend of 46% Zinfandel, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the balance is Syrah, Petite Sirah, Charbono, and Grenache. In other words it is a field blend. Consistently in the Spectator's Top 100 and very highly rated we wanted to treat our club members. It is a very big wine so serve this with a big bloody steak!
2007 Domaine Font-Mars Cabernet Sauvignon Vin de Pays D'Oc France - This tasty little treat has one of the worst labels in Peter Weygandt's portfolio. I apologize. The owners claim that fossilized dinosaur eggs were found at this estate. I just thought you would like to knowJ The wine is a medium-bodied red that reflects its Mediterranean roots with spicy, ripe fruit that is more sophisticated than jammy, and notes of licorice and garrigue.Try this with Portabella mushrooms sautéed in olive oil and Herbs de Provence.

2007 Konzelmann Estate Winery Pinot Blanc Niagara Peninsula - This is a delicious Pinot Blanc from of all places, Canada! It received a fantastic review in the Wall Street Journal. It is a perfect summer sipper and a great party wine. The label says it is off dry but there is no sweetness. It is a dead ringer for an Alsatian Pinot Blanc with apple, pear, mineral and slight citrus flavors. Totally refreshing, it will help you survive the rest of the hottest summer ever. Enjoy it with cheese, salads and other light fare.
2008 Domaine Serge Dageneau Pouilly-Fume Loire - Serge is the son of the most famous winemaker from this region, Didier Dageneau. He is going his own way with a style that is distinctly ripe-tasting, rich, with melony qualities which come from Sauvignon Blanc on calcaire soil, when harvested at its peak of maturity. It works very well with oysters Rockefeller and any goat cheese dish.
2007 Domaine Moillard "Brecot" Macon-Villages Bourgogne France - I can't get enough of the wines of Domaine Moillard. This is a wonderful Chardonnay that is truly value priced. It is clean, crisp, lightly mineral with classic pear and apple flavors with a bit of hazelnut. There is no noticeable oak and the finish is surprisingly long and pure. It is medium-bodied and more substantial than its first impression indicates. Match this wine with pork tenderloin and apples.

2008 Mallee Sands Chardonnay Fools Bay Australia -This AustralianChardonnay is sharply focused with lime and pear scents that give way to riper apple, pear and melon. Firm orchard fruit flavors are framed by a citrus crispness and minerals, leading to a juicy finish. Pair this with rotisserie chicken and grilled summer squash with tomatoes.
2009 Domaine Cassagnole Gros Manseng Reserve Cotes de Gascogne France - This is the new vintage of a wine we've carried and loved for a long time. This fresh, medium-bodied wine is fruit-forward with flavors of orange zest and tangerine on a honeyed palate with hints of pink grapefruit. This wine works great with a light summer salad and pan-seared scallops.
2008 Henri Bourgeois Sancerre "Les Baronnes" Loire France - Sancerre is my favorite Loire Vally white because I feel it most truly expresses the best characteristics of the Sauvignon Blanc grape. With intense aromas and flavors of citrus, grapefruit, melon and lime this is a textbook example. The finish is extremely long for this varietal. It is truly perfect with sautéed trout or seabass.

Red
2008 Twenty Rows Cabernet Sauvignon Napa - This wine is a sign of the times in Napa. It comes from Vinoce Cellars which makes Cabernets in the $60-70 price range but needed to move more wine because of the soft market. The fruit for this bottling comes from the superb appellations of Diamond and Howell Mountains. Flavors of black cherry, blackberry, currant, licorice, chocolate and smoke are neatly layered for complexity. Firm, solid tannins provide good structure, weight and a long finish. It will improve over the next 5-7 years but is delicious now. It is great with duck risotto.
2008 Domaine Grand Nicolet Cotes-du-Rhone France - This is another superb value from the Peter Weygandt portfolio which Robert Parker rated 89 points and described it as " a dark ruby/purple-tinged, sexy, round wine offering plenty of black fruits intertwined with hints of chocolate, earth, and licorice. This medium-bodied yet surprisingly fleshy, succulent 2008 can be enjoyed over the next 2-3 years." It is very well balanced. It works perfectly with coq au vin.
2009 Barocco Rosso del Salento Italy - We had this wonderful everyday red when we first opened but for some reason it disappeared. About two weeks ago it reappeared with a new distributor and it was immediately ordered. Made from the Negroamaro grape, it is a stunning value. It is dark in color with spicy fruit and tobacco flavors. Even at this price it is big enough to stand up to almost any dish.
2009 Maison L'Aiglon Saint-Chinian Grand Reserve Languedoc France - A blend of Grenache, Syrah and Carignan, it is medium-bodied with bright raspberry, wild cherry, white pepper and plum flavors that are lightly framed by a short bit of oak aging. It supplies a lot of bang for the buck and is very versatile when matching it with food. It would be great with ribs but will also work with most poultry and pork dishes that are not exceedingly spicy.
2008 Pennywise Pinot Noir California - Pennywise is a new project that produces a Pinot Noir from previously costly Monterey fruit. Three years ago this would have been a $20 bottle but this time the consumer wins. Wild cherry, strawberry and blueberry flavors are integrated with a little bit of French oak. On the medium-bodied side it is a delicious match with duck breast or peppered seared tuna.
2008 Domaine Vissoux Pierre-Marie Chermette Moulin á Vent "Les Trios Roches" Beaujolais France - Peter Weygandt, my hero, states on his website that this wine most represents his ideal of all the wines in his portfolio. Robert Parker rated it 91-2 Points. It may be the best Beaujolais made! Medium-bodied with bright red fruit, cola and spice flavors lead to a long and structured finish. It is bottled unfined and unfiltered with no added sulfites. This is truly a special wine. You should read about the blue footed Bresse chicken and there is a great dish at this site http://www.frenchentree.com/france-burgundy-food-drink/displayarticle.asp?id=30176

2008 Senorio d Rubios Albarino Rias Baixas Spain - Coming from northwest Spain and made from only handpicked grapes, this Albarino has a beautiful yellow color with floral and lemon citrus aromas. It is totally refreshing with fantastic acidity and hints of peach and lemon flavors as well as a hint of white grapejuice. It is very clean and crisp which makes it perfect for fruits, light cheeses as well as shellfish.
2007 Celani Family Vineyards Chardonnay Napa - Celani Vineyards make nothing but excellent wines and this is a perfect example. In fact, you might never buy Cakebread Chardonnay again after you taste this beauty which is normally 46.99 a bottle. Bold and rich, it has intense flavors of melon, pear, hazelnut and a touch of vanilla oak. Most California Chardonnays just don't have the balance that this one possesses. The complexity of flavors make this a wine that pairs well with many things. However, lobster with drawn garlic butter made a perfect marriage.
2007 Mercer Estates Sauvignon Blanc Columbia Valley Washington - A joint project of the Hogue Cellars family and the Mercers this is a Washington white that emulates the white wines of Bordeaux. It is medium-bodied with good acidity and clean but ripe fruit. The predominant flavors are lemon, lime, peach and apple. Stephen Tanzer also likes it a lot, he rated it 88 Points. I had it with grilled scallops and risotto and loved it.

2009 Chateau Peynaud Blanc Bordeaux France - This Chateau continues to amaze me. The new vintage is the best they have ever made and that is saying something. Our best selling white wine of all times, they probably should just raise the price. Perfectly balanced with beautiful freshness and acidity without the tart flavors some Sauvignon Blanc/Semillion blends exhibit it is equal to wines twice the price or more. It will go with anything from shellfish and richer seafood to many poultry dishes.
2007 Albert Mann Pinot Blanc Alsace France - Robert Parker loves this wine and so do I. It is an equal blend of Pinot Auxerrois and true Pinot Blanc. When rating it 90 Points Parker described it as "Alluring aromas of fresh apricot, tangerine zest and shrimp shell set the scene for a generous mouthful of pit- and citrus-fruits that strikes a superb balance between refreshment and creaminess of texture." Enjoy this wine with herb-stuffed roast chicken and vegetables.
2009 Over The Edge Pinot Gris Martinbourough New Zealand - I admit I did not want to like this wine. I just didn't think they would keep the acidity necessary to make Pinot Gris balanced. Fortunately I agreed to try it and I was totally enchanted. This is a sexy little wine that has great ripe fruit with peach, pear, white stone and melon flavors. In fact the depth of the fruit might make one mistakenly think this wine is sweet but it is technically bone dry. It was perfect with fettucine alfredo with sautéed shrimp.

2007 Ikella Malbec Mendoza Argentina - Rated as highly as 91 points, the Ikella is violet in color with aromas of plum, plum and more plum. The wine is bold and viscous with rich fruits, dried herbs and sweet spice. A great introduction to Malbec. It is perfect for grilling and works best with a bit of pepper and spice.
2007 Boutari Agiorgitiko Nemea Greece - Made from the Agiorgitiko grape, this wine is very representative of the advances in Greek wines over the last 20 years. It is a bold dry red that has intense plum, cherry and cranberry fruit framed by new oak. It is a wine that will definitely age very well. Lamb shish kabobs are perfect with this wine.
2006 Castell Del Remi Gotim Bru Costers Del Segre Spain - I truly love this wine. I have been selling it for a very long time and it is consistently excellent. This vintage was rated 90 points by The Wine Advocate. It is a blend of Cabernet, Tempranillo and Merlot. Complex and elegant, it has layers and layers of flavor that lead to a long, smooth oak finish. Although it is pretty full-bodied it is so well made that you have many food pairing choices. My version of this recipe worked great http://recipes.wikia.com/wiki/Albondigas_-_Spanish_Meatballs
2007 Ikella Cabernet Sauvignon Mendoza Argentina - This Cab is cherry red in color with pronounced red fruit aromas of cherries, red plums, raspberries. It also has hints of dried herbs, tobacco leaf and oak spices. Surprisingly structured with medium plus body and a good long finish it was rated as highly as 90 points. This is a definite grilled meat wine.
2007 Las Moras Bonarda San Juan Argentina - I love a good mystery and the identity of the Bonarda grape in Argentina certainly is one. There is no agreement on what it is and the only thing that is certain is that Italian immigrants brought it. This tasty example is medium-bodied with nice cherry, red raspberry and a bit of spice. It sort of reminds me of a Barbera. It is a red that works well with poultry or pork.
2006 Duckhorn Cabernet Sauvignon Napa - This wine normally retails for as much as $65.00 so I jumped at the chance to feature it in the Half-Case Club. It is a Bordeaux style blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, & 3% Cabernet Franc. Flavors of black currant, cherry, plum and cassis lead to a full-bodied but smooth finish. Oak is integrated and not dominant. It will age well for at least 10-15 years but can be enjoyed immediately. Filet mignon stuffed with mushrooms and blue cheese makes a perfect dinner.

2009 Boutari Moschofilero Mantinia Greece - This perfect summer white comes from the appellation of Mantinia, site of the largest battle of the Peloponnesian War. The vines are 15-35 years old and 2100 feet in elevation which adds a lot of complexity. It is filled with aromas and flavors of honeydew melon and a squirt of lemon juice followed by a very distinct floral aspect, like white rose petals. Beautiful, crisp acidity jumps out at you with totally refreshing crispness. Wine Spectator and The Wine Advocate just love this beauty. I had it with grouper but it will work very well with any white fleshed fish or with shellfish. I would love to try it with mussels.
2007 Donna Fugata Anthilia Sicily - Tanzer just loved this Italian white and said "Straw-yellow with a hint of gold. Delightful nose is redolent of tangerine and bright floral aromas. Similarly bright and fresh in the mouth, with a salty touch to the ripe citrus and apricot flavors. Finishes clean and subtly saline." He rated it 88 which is equal to a 93 in the Spectator. I love shell-fish and I had this wine with grilled garlic shrimp.
2009 Frog's Leap Sauvignon Blanc Napa - The 2009 Frog s Leap Sauvignon Blanc is quite rich but has classic aromas of lemongrass, white flowers and soft mineral notes. Flavors of grapefruit, lemon zest and delicate white peaches are enhanced by a wet stone element. The wine's low alcohol and soft acid make for a totally engaging and enjoyable white that will stand up to many full-flavored dishes. I tried it with simple grilled chicken with a sea-salt pepper rub that worked beautifully.

2009 Brancott Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough New Zealand - This is textbook Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. It is medium-bodied with classic gooseberry, lime, pear and mineral flavors with just a hint of tropical fruit. It retains excellent acidity without being sharp. This vintage was rated 89 points by the Wine Spectator. It goes very well with Mediterranean style foods as well as with grilled shellfish. For those who love oysters, this is a perfect match.
2007 Chateau Cantelaudette Graves Bordeaux - A balanced blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, this white Bordeaux is at its drinking peak. Flavors of melon and pear along with a touch of orange peel lead to a clean, refreshing finish. It is a subtle wine that seduces you rather than beating you over the head. A Caesar salad with grilled salmon paired with this wine made the end of my day very pleasant.
2008 Sonoma-Cutrer Russian River Ranches Chardonnay - America's favorite restaurant Chardonnay, this wine has really changed over the last decade. Previously an oak bomb, now only 30% sees new oak. Although it is still a pretty ripe style with some tropical fruit such as mango and kiwi it now also has balanced acidity and much more complex structure. However, it is still a pretty full-bodied white that can stand up to bold foods. I hadn't had it in a while, so I tried this wine with sautéed salmon, which I usually pair with Pinot Noir. It paired beautifully!

2008 Joel Gott "815" Cabernet Sauvignon California - This restaurant favorite has ripe fruit with blueberry, cherry-cola, and black cherry flavors. The aromas are pretty intense with violet, vanilla, cedar, chocolate and cinnamon spice. The surprisingly soft ripe tannins result in a balanced and long velvety finish. I had it with beef stroganoff a couple months ago and the match was seamless.
2009 Over The Edge Pinot Noir Martinborough New Zealand - Many experts, including Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson, feel that Martinborough has the best potential for Pinot Noir outside of Burgundy. With its cool, dry growing season, this is a perfect example. Balanced flavors of blueberry and raspberry are enhanced by Burgundy-like minerality and nearly invisible tannins. It is an outstanding value. Absolutely perfect with rare tuna!
2007 Falernia Carmenere-Syrah Reserva Elqui Valley Chile - This is a juicy red from a somewhat isolated region of Chile. It has received great critical success with scores ranging from 88-91. Quite rich and full, it has bright red cherry, cola, chocolate and plum flavors that lead to a long smooth finish. It would obviously go with most red meats but it works very well with marinara sauce.
2008 Chateau La Bastide Corbieres France - This Syrah based red is from the portfolio of Peter Weygandt. It is ripe and spicy with flavors of blackberry, ripe red raspberry, cocoa and coriander like spice. It is almost full-bodied making it very versatile in food pairing. I had it with my favorite, grilled buffalo.
2007 Le Ragnaie Rosso di Montalcino Italy - The Le Ragnaie Rosso di Montalcino is a gorgeous ruby red color. This baby Brunello is made from Sangiovese Grosso grapes. It is a balanced wine presenting red plum and layers of lush black cherry fruit. On the palate this is a full-bodied wine which is fresh with rounded tannins and a long finish. It will age well for about 5 years. I had it with chicken marsala and loved the pairing.
2005 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Toscano - This is essentially a baby Super Tuscan with its blend being roughly equal parts Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Rich and smoothly ripe it has flavors of black cherry, tar, cassis and plum. It is ready to drink. Serve this with grilled, butterflied chicken that has been marinated in olive oil, lemon juice, crushed garlic and black pepper.

2009 Pedro Ximenez Falernia Reserva Elqui Valley Chile - I had never tasted a Pedro Ximenez grape until I tasted this wine. It was like Sauvignon Blanc meets Pinot Gris meets Gros Manseng. Crisp and clean it has wonderful flora aromas and fruit flavors of kiwi, lemon, lime, melon and peach. I really enjoyed it with brie and fruit but it will go with any shell or whitefish.
2008 Pascal & Nicolas Reverdy Cuvée "LesCoutes" Sancerre Non-FiltreLoire France - Neither cold stabilized nor filtered, this stunning white was rated 92 points by Robert parker. It is made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc. It has incredible complex flavors of mint, grapefruit, sage, crushed stone and citrus that possesses intense minerality. It is both intense and delicate. It was great with swordfish in an olive, lemon and garlic marinade.
2009 Joel Gott Sauvignon Blanc California - This is a lip-smacking taste treat that exhibits beautiful meyer lemon, green apple, start fruit and melon flavors. This is the first thing I want to drink after crossing the Sahara Desert. It isn't to light so it goes with a variety of foods. My personal pairing preference is with grilled trout with a light olive oil and lemon juice dressing.

2008 La Chasse Du Pape Cotes du Rhone Blanc France - A traditional blend of Grenache Blanc, Rousillon, Clairette Blanc and Bourboulenc, this is a beautiful medium-bodied white. No oak is noticeable in the peach, orange peel, melon and pear flavors. It is fresh without being tart and has a wonderfully deep finish. It is perfect for grilled chicken or pork and will stand up to pretty hearty dishes.
2008 Chateau Font-Mars Picpoul de Pinet Languedoc France - I have wanted to use this wine in the club for a long time. It is a perfect summer wine with a lovely floral nose that leads to lemon, lime, slight grapefruit and Burgundy-like mineral flavors. The Picpoul grape's name means "lip smacker" because the wine can be exceedingly tart if not sufficiently ripe. I had a bottle with mussels in a white wine and garlic sauce last night and it rocked. If you like Vinho Verde, try this one out.
2007 Chartron et Trebuchet Rully "Cuvee La Chaume" Bourgogne Blanc France - I have been buying wine from this producer for over 15 years. Their wines are consistently well made and reasonably priced. 100% Chardonnay, it shows Bartlett pera, hazelnut, citrus and mineral flavors with a slight touch of oak. The finish is quite long and elegant while having a delicious minerality. It is pretty complex. I had it with swordfish but it worked well with any substantial seafood dish.

2006 Lake Sonoma Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley - Once again we are able to take advantage of the soft wine market and feature something pretty special. This classic Cabernet was rated 91 Points by Wine Enthusiast and retails for as much as $24. It has multiple layers of flavors including cedar, licorice, olives, cassis and raspberry. The tannins are smooth and integrated. Perfect for grilling meats, put in your refrigerator for about 15-20 minutes before serving outside.
2007 Catina Valpantena Valpolicella Ripasso Veneto - This is gorgeous with aromas of coffee, chocolate and earthiness coupled with luscious and endless black currant and cassis flavors, supple tannin structure and near-perfect balance. It is truly a "baby Amarone" which is a blend of Corvina, Rodinella and Molinara grapes near Venice. It was great with duck risotto.
2008 Zolo Malbec Mendoza Argentina - Another 91 point wine, this is one of the tastiest new Malbecs on the market. Meduim to full-bodied, it has blackcherry, raspberry, spice and plum flavors. There is no noticeable oak. It is simply amazing how well Malbec does in Argentina compared to other places it is grown. At this price it is perfect for burgers. However, I had it with veggie lasagna and the match was sublime.
2008 Memo Mona Sangiovese Terre Di Chieti Italy - Marco Flacco made this wine and he puts his name right on the label. Remember his name for the future. This wine is made from the great Tuscan grape and it is a stunning value. Meduim-bodied with bright cherry and blackberry flavors, it is perfectly balanced and incredibly smooth. It tastes like a much more expensive Chianti. It actually works quite well with grilled salmon as well as with any tomato based sauce.
2007 Petit Rimauresq Cotes de Provence - From the sunny heart of Provence comes this sexy blend of Syrah 35%, Carignan 28%, CabernetSauvignon 22% and Mourvèdre 15%. Slightly spicy with ripe but balanced flavors of blackberry, red raspberry and maybe even a hint of cinnamon it has a long lip smacking finish. Strangely, it went really well with Chinese green pepper steak. I think it would be best with a spicy pork dish and roasted vegetable.
2006 Martinet Menut Priorat Spain - As Priorat has surged in popularity and to some degree quality, I am seeing many wines that have adopted the "international style" and forgotten their roots. Maybe more need the feminine touch. Sara Perez, Martinet's winemaker, has created a superb classic style Priorat. It is lush but balanced, with dark fruit, coffee and mushroom flavors. It will age well for 8 to 10 years if you so desire. It obviously works well with paella but another main course that is an excellent match is blackened chicken.

However, I had it with veggie lasagnaand the match was sublime.
2008 Chateau de la Greffiere "Sous le Bois" Macon-La Roche-Vineuse - Located only a short distance from Pouilly-Fuisse, Chateau de la Greffiere makes two Chardonnays. One is the "Vieilles Vignes" (old vines) and this one. The "Sous le Bois" (under wood) is partially fermented in oak and about 15% is aged in new oak. The result is a wine of such complexity and depth it rivals many at twice the price. Ithas classic pear, apple, hazelnut and mineral flavors with a very long finish. I have had this wine with quail several times and the match was heavenly.
2008 Domaine Servin Petit Chablis Bourgogne - Chablis is the source of the world's most pure Chardonnays and Domaine Servin is one of the finest producers in this poorly understood region. The Petit Chablis is the perfect wine with which to begin the demystification.Chablis is the northernmost Chardonnay source in France. The result is a wine that isclean, crisp and moderate in alcohol (12.5%). This one has flint, citrus, mineral and tartpear flavors with no oak. It is PERFECT with mussels in a white wine sauce!
2007 Strele Soave Italy - Made from the Garganega grape, Soave has undergone a transformation over the last decade. From a mass produced insipid type of swill it has been reborn as a wonderful source of delicious summer wine. The Strele is quite yellow with wonderful floral aromas. Flavors of lemon tart, bartlet pear and classic almond notes lead to a clean yet smooth finish. It is a great match for grouper or seabass.

2008 Kurt Angerer Kies Gruner Veltliner Kamptal Osterriech - 15 years ago the Austrian wines that were available could not be given away. With the shocking increase in quality demand has increased dramatically, especially with the best Austrian Grape Gruner Veltliner. The Angerer (88 W Spec)has concentrated flavors of ripe peach, ruby grapefruit and pear. The long finish is spicy and intense, with hints of glazed citrus. It is great with shellfish or Caesar salad.
2008 Vietti Roero Arneis Italy - Bright yellow in color with fresh floral, citrus and melon aromas with hints of nuts, it is an unoaked, dry, medium-bodied white wine with crisp acidity. The quality is much better than most other Arneis because the vines are at least 25 years old. Its complexity was enhanced by bottling the wine unfiltered. It is wonderful with brie and fresh fruits.
2008 Esperanza Verdejo Viura Spain- Rated 89 points by The Wine Advocate, the blend is 85% Verdejo and 15% Viura. The Verdejo has many similarities with Sauvignon Blanc which show in the Esperanzas' citrus, lemon-lime, spice and melon flavors. It has moderate acidity and excellent balance. I enjoyed it very much when paired with grilled shrimp. Baste the shrimp in a butter, garlic, white wine sauce with a nice touch of red pepper.

Half-Case Reds
2007 Ramsay Merlot Napa Valley - This wine is a perfect example of why I hate the movie Sideways. Merlot always has been at least the equal of Pinot Noir. Coming from the near perfect 2007 vintage the dry conditions yielded rich flavors of blueberry, black cherry and cassis which are enhanced by the gentle use of oak during aging. This red has lush viscosity and is quite intense. It is quite literally perfect with grilled lamb chops!
2006 Shinas Estate The Verdict Victoria Australia - Australian Cabernets can be over the top but like his other wines, George Shinas makes this one in a big but complex style. Full-bodied and mouth filling, the verdict on this wine is delicious. It has ripe blackberry, black plum, pepper and sexy vanilla(from oak aging) flavors with a finish that lasts forever. It would age for at least 7-10 years. I had it with mesquite grilled beef shish-kabobs marinated in a soy/ginger and red wine sauce. Awesome!
2007 Mandra Rossa Nero D'Avola Sicily - This value priced wine is amazing! Robert Parker rated it 91 points and Stephen Tanzer gave it a 90. Ruby red with flashes of orange with an intense bouquet, it has layers of plum, black cherry and licorice flavors in a smooth and supple wine. It may be inexpensive but it will age for at least a decade. This is true of most Nero D'Avolas. It is a great match for hard spicy cheeses such as Idiazabal as well as grilled meats, especially bison.
2009 Trapiche Pinot Noir Mendoza Argentina - Although Chile gets more press Argentina makes better wines. Under the radar, Pinot Noir from Mendoza is getting better every year even though Malbec gets the attention. This tasty treat is made in an unoaked style with raspberry, mushroom, white pepper and spice notes. Medium bodied and smooth, it goes very well with grilled salmon.
2007 Domaine Carneros Pinot Noir Carneros - Owned by the famed French Champagne house Taittinger, Domaine Carneros has consistently produced one of California's most elegant and balanced Pinots. Floral, anise and crushed berry aromas are intense, supple and balanced, with flavors of raspberry, wild berry and hints of strawberry. The finish ends with an elegant Burgundy-like minerally edge. Unlike many California Pinots which are blended with Syrah(they don't tell you), this wine is obviously made to enhance food. I love this wine with duck breast.
2007 Domaine de Fontenille Cotes du Luberon France - When the price for this Weygandt import dropped from $17.99 to $11.99 it was an obvious choice for the wine club. It is a blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah. The beautiful nose is full of black fruit and the flavors are full-bodied as well with black cherry, earth and spice. Close your eyes and take a sip, it will transport you back to Provence. The Fontenille was rated as highly as 90 points and is a great party wine at the new price. Try this wine with coq au vin.

2007 Robert Talbott Kali Hart Chardonnay Monterey California - A strongly flavored Chardonnay, it is ripe, with pineapple jam, apricot-infused crème brulee and sweet vanilla-butterscotch flavors. In defiance of all the richness, it's crisp and bone dry. This is a fresh, exuberant, medium-bodied wine with the distinctive Talbott style of lush, tropical fruit, toasty oak and minerals, and a long citrus-filled finish. "This regionally inspired wine has great acid balance and is made to enjoy upon release." The distributor served it with beer can chicken and that really worked.
2008 San de Guilhem Cotes de Gascogne France - This wine is bone dry and intensely flavored. It gets your attention because whites in this price range don't usually have finishes that last forever. It is a medium-bodied blend of Gros Manseng, Colombard and Ugni Blanc that has flavors of orange peel, pink grapefruit and pear that is exquisitely clean. Serve this wine with sea scallops sautéed with white wine, butter and garlic.
2007 R & B Cellars Sauvignon "Serenade in Blanc" North Coast - Kevin Brown is the owner and winemaker at R & B Cellars. It is his practice to make varietally true wines that offer great quality at good prices. His Sauvignon is classic California (50% Lake County and 50% Mendecino) style with ruby grapefruit, tropical fruit and citrus with a rounder and not tart finish. It works with traditional pairings as well as being a good match with many Asian dishes. I recently enjoyed it with a Caesar salad with grilled shrimp.

2006 Flora Springs Soliloquy Napa - Robert Parker rated this Sauvignon 90 points and said of Flora Springs "One of the first to see the future in high-class Sauvignon Blancs made in a non-malolactic, Bordeaux-like style, the 2006 Soliloquy exhibits the crisp, melony, fresh lemon grass notes of this varietal". Unlike many California Sauvignons this wine thrives and works because of its acidity. It will age for about 5-7 years but is best drunk during this year. Paired with grouper, you will just love it.
2006 Domaine Gayda L'Archet Cuvée Occitane Vin de Pays D'Oc - The smokey nose shows obvious Roussanne/Marsanne notes, Grenache Blanc and Macebeo give aromas of white flowers. It is medium-bodied with peach, orange and hazelnut flavors that stay crisp because there was no use of oak. It may be a pain to make but I had it with Mediterranean seabass that was baked in salt(I didn't cook) and it was just great.
2009 The Infamous Goose Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough New Zealand - Quite the bargain, the Infamous Goose is pale green tinged in appearance. The wine has vibrant and intense aromas of lime, grapefruit, herbs and fresh apple. The flavors are bright, fresh, juicy and filled with sweet herb, citrus and gooseberry characters with a hint of passion fruit and tropical fruits. A true porch sipper, it is best with shellfish or cheese and fruit.

2003 Gioso Nebbiolo D'Alba Italy - During our three years of doing the half-case club we had never found a Nebbiolo that was affordable and yet reasonably priced. This "baby Barolo" finally allowed us to fill that void. Nebbiolo is famed for its ability to age almost forever. The Gioso has about 10-15 years more life in a cellar. Although it has classic fading red brick color it is almost full-bodied with flavors of anise, black licorice, plum and cedar. Splurge and serve this treasure with veal and wild mushroom risotto. We have a very small amount to sell so get it asap.
2008 Leese-Fitch Pinot Noir California - The price and quality of this Pinot Noir are just another symptom of the glut of high quality juice in California. Two years ago this wine would retail for more than $20. It has scents of black cherry, black raspberry, and a touch of toast. The flavors of cranberry, chocolate, raspberry, ripe cherries and spice combine elegantly with its gentle acidity. It is great with duck breast and gnocci.
2007 Moillard Cotes Du Rhone "Les Violettes" France - This wine seems to be a permanent member on most critic's best value lists. Coming from the near perfect 2007 vintage this wine is a good example. A blend of Grenache, Mouvedre, Cinsault and Syrah, it has wonderful complexity for its price. There is very little oak influence making it very food friendly with nice spice, wild cherry and plum flavors. Try this with classic French onion soup. YOU MUST USE GRUYERE CHEESE NOT PROVOLONE! It isn't Italian onion soup!
2008 Bodegas La Cartuja Priorat Spain - 50% Garnacha, 30% Mazuelo, 10 % Cabernet Sauvignon and 10 % Syrah. Robert Parker gave the previous vintage 90 points and the 2008 might be even better. It is from the Priorat region where the wines are usually much more expensive. With integrated tannins and flavors of black cherry, blackberry, blueberry and vanilla spice it delivers quite a bit of bang for the buck. It is perfect with grilled hanger steak.
2005 Chateau Pont De Brion Graves Bordeaux France - 2005 was a great vintage and the Pont de Brion is an excellent example. This property is located about 1.5 miles from Chateau Haut Brion which costs upwards of $700 a bottle. It is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with some Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Full-bodied and quite powerful, it will easily age for more than 10 years. The oak is just now starting to mellow yielding black fruit, cedar, coffee and truffle flavors that are a superb pairing with rare lamb.
2008 Basico Rojo La Mancha Spain - It is amazing to me that even with the cost of the Euro and the cost of shipping Spain is still able to provide so many values wines with great quality. This bargain is a blend of 50 % Tempranillo and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon. Medium-bodied, it has red raspberry, plum, cola and herb flavors. Even though it is inexpensive it can stand up to complex dishes. Howver, at this price just pop a burger on the grill and enjoy!

2006 Clos Du Bois Chardonnay Calcaire Russian River Valley - This classic Californian is a great value. The Russian River Valley provides the fruit for the 2006 Calcaire which exemplifies the crisp, fresh fruit flavors that make cool climate Chardonnay superior. Brilliant, silver-straw yellow in color, this Chardonnay exhibits generous citrus-laced aromas of apple blossom and pear, nutmeg and crème brulée. In the mouth it is creamy and rich, with ripe pear and apple fruit with a splash of refreshing lemon and lime. A big wine, serve it with chicken Kiev.
2006 Shottesbrooke Engine Room White McLaren Vale Australia - 70% Sauvignon Blanc, 20% Chardonnay and 10% Semillon. The label for this wine is so ghastly you would think it was a designed by the temperance union. Regardless, we are the beneficiaries. It had a retail price of $16.99 but the distributor gave us a fantastic deal. Crisp, clean, fruity and refreshing, the Engine room has tasty citrus, kiwi, pineapple and melon flavors. I served it with shrimp fettucine in alfredo sauce. You will find this a great match.
2008 Domaine Raymond Dupont-Fahn "Chaumes des Perrieres" Bourgogne - I absolutely love this wine! It represents what classic Chardonnay is all about. Full-bodied and rich, it receives a moderate amount of oak to add complexity without being heavy handed. Flavors of hazelnut, pear, apple and classic mineral create a multi-layered experience. The finish seems to last forever. It will improve with age for 3-5 years. I found this wine to be a fantastic match with poached salmon in caper butter sauce. If you have the budget try it with lobster in drawn butter. NOTE: recently there has been an increase in low priced lobster in grocery stores. Don't buy it unless it is cold water lobster. The cheap lobster available recently is from places like Thailand, Nicaragua and Mexico. DO NOT BUY!

2008 Wolfgang "Gru-Vee" Gruner Veltliner Burgenland Austria - This fun and value priced version of Austria's best white wine grape is chock full of ripe fruit flavors including orange peel, citrus, green apple and a bit of nuttiness. Gruner Veltliner sales are growing rapidly in the United States because it produces both fun refreshing wine drinkable by itself but it also pairs well with abroad range of foods. However, don't believe the Austrian press which tries to argue that it works with red meats. That is a big FAIL. Enjoy the "Gru-Vee" with seabass or with frilled lemon chicken.
2008 Pierre-Marie Chermette Beaujolais Blanc France - All Beaujolais Blancs must be Chardonnay. This one is made by one of Beaujolais' finest winemakers. It is medium-bodied and round in style with just a hint crisp acidity. No oak influence is present so you have pure apple, pear, apricot and nutmeg flavors. Serve this with a rich white sauce and poultry.
2008 La Caplana Gavi di Gavi Italy - Made from the Cortese grape, Gavi is one of the less well known yet delicious Italian white wines. The La Caplana is a beautiful example and by far our best selling version. The nose is intense with citrus and honeydew melon enhanced by minerality and spice from grape. On the palate it's full, with bright citrus fruit supported by greenish lemon acidity and by some underlying zestiness that flows into a long clean and lemony finish. It is a great match with grilled fish. I know this sounds crazy but I once had it with fried chicken, potato salad, deviled eggs and baked beans at a picnic and it was great.

2007 Memo Montepulciano D'Abruzzo Italy - Mario Ercolino is a young winemaker who I think will become a rock star in the wine world during the next ten years. This Sangiovese based wine shows what can happen when a great talent works with what has historically been an everyday type of wine. Although it is affordable, the Memo has a rainbow of flavors which include black cherry, coffee, ripe plum and cola. With a medium body and beautifully balanced acid and fruit the Memo is a perfect food wine. It might be the most versatile food matching wine in the shop. Be adventurous and try it with a dish that is new to you.
2002 Care Grenacha-Cabernet Carinena Spain - This Spaniard comes from a new distributor and we are quite puzzled as to why they still had a 2002 vintage wine of this quality still in stock. Rated in the low 90s, it is medium to full-bodied with some delicious dark fruit, coffee, raspberry and cassis flavors. The use of 65% American oak is revealed by the presence of a touch of vanilla. (FYI, Spain uses a lot of American Oak). With eight years of age, seven in the bottle, this wine is at its drinking prime. Enjoy it with a grilled hangar steak.
2007 Ornellaia Le Volte Toscana Italy - Orenellaia is arguably the best Italian winery. The 2007 Le Volte is Ornellaia’s entry-level wine and it is especially opulent in this vintage. Made in the Super Tuscan style, it is a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet and Merlot. It is a round and elegant wine that definitely reveals its regal heritage. It is framed with judicious French oak giving it complexity worthy of a much more expensive wine. Go with an authentic Tuscan menu and enjoy it with veal parmigiana.
2008 M. Plouzeau Chinon Non-Filtre Loire France - The next time you are in France you might want to visit this domaine. A superb producer of Cabernet Franc, they actually encourage visitors. Take a bus from Tours that takes you almost to the door! Marc Plouzeau took over the domaine in 1988 and it is now Ecocert. The Rive Gauche is unfiltered so it has some stuffing but it is made in a very soft style that de-emphasizes tannins. Pan roasted stuffed pork chops are a great pairing. I suggest blue cheese and our olive tapenade as excellent stuffings.
2007 Domaine Du Seigneur "Antares" Lirac France - This wine is a superb value. It is the product of the handiwork of Phillippe Campie, who is the finest wine consultant in the Rhone today. Rated 91 by The Wine Advocate, it is both full-bodied and rich while maintaining elegance. Made Biodynamically, it is a blend of Grenache 60%, Syrah 20% and Mouvedre 20%. It will improve for 5-7 years but drinks beautifully now.
2007 R & B Cellars Zinfandel Lodi - With this new vintage and packaging our friend Kevin at R & B continues offering one of if not the best value Zinfandels available. Rich and jammy, you will find ripe blackberry, spicy cherry, cola and white pepper flavors. By adding 9% Petit Sirah Kevin has increased the complexity. All the fruit comes from Lodi which is probably the best source for Zinfandel in California. At this price it just seems perfect for a big juicy burger but the quality in the bottle allows it to work with finer cuisine.

2007 Symington Family Estate Tuella Douro Portugal - The only Portuguese white wine most people are familiar with is Vinho Verde. You are really going to enjoy this new stranger. It is made by the legendary Port house family, the Symingtons, Tuella is named for the river that runs through the vineyard area where the grapes for this wine grow. It is made with the popular, aromatic Portuguese variety Malvasia Fina. It will remind you a little bit of a dry Pinot Grigio with its crisp refreshing citrus and melon flavors. It is a perfect match for grilled foods, particularly prawns or herb chicken breast.
2008 Domaine des Cassagnoles Reserve Selection Gros Manseng VDP des Cotes de Gascogne - Gros Manseng is a virtually unknown grape which historically saw much of its production go into fortified wines or brandies. Over the last ten years some producers recognized its quality as a table wine and this is the best example. Medium-bodied, it is zesty but not tart. With noticeable apricot, grapefruit and green apple flavors it offers many food pairing opportunities. I absolutely love it with Thai cusine and it is great with a cobb salad.
2008 Bridesmaid White California - This Californian is a blend of the two most important Bordeaux white varieties, 60% Semillon and 40% Sauvignon Blanc from three counties(56% Napa 33% Monterey 11% Lake). Celebrity wine maker Pam Starr and two of her buddies made the Bridesmaid as a collaboration. It has a tropical nose that leads to citrus, meyer lemon, banana and almost Burgundy-like mineral notes on the truly sexy finish. This is the perfect wine to start a dinner with goats milk cheese and a baguette. DO NOT SERVE WITH BLUE CHEESE!

Celebrity wine maker Pam Starr and two of buddies made the Bridesmaid as a collaboration. It has a tropical nose that leads to citrus, meyer lemon, banana and almost Burgundy-like mineral notes on the truly sexy finish. This is the perfect wine to start a dinner with goat's milk cheese and a baguette. DO NOT SERVE WITH BLUE CHEESE!
2006 Domaine du Grand Tinel Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc France - Everyone knows about the great red wines from Chateauneuf-du-Pape but the whites are one of the under-appreciated treasures of the wine world. The primary grape is Grenache Blanc. Almost full bodied, this textbook example has intense flavors of white currants, underripe apricot, fresh grapefruit and a hint of honey. It is dry. If you want to impress your guests serve this wine with a stuffed Cornish game hen using dried fruit.
2008 Just Sauvignon Blanc Vin de Pays D'Oc France - The next time you are considering a Sauvignon Blanc from the Southern Hemisphere just breathe deeply, step back, and choose Just Sauvignon Blanc! You will be doing your wallet and your palette equal favors. Coming fresh to you from the sunny south of France this tasty white is just what you need. It is classic Sauvignon with crisp clean citrus flavors that offer dry grapefruit and melon without the grassiness sometimes found in unoaked Sauvignons. It works extremely well with scallops, shrimp and whitefish. Just the right wine for parties.
2006 Albert Bichot Bourgone Blanc Vieilles Vignes France - Bichot is one of the very finest Burgundy houses and this wine illustrates that fact perfectly. The Vieilles Vignes (old vines) designation means the vines are a minimum of 20 years old The cuvée or blend is from grapes that are sourced only in the Côte d’Or region of Burgundy. The grapes are from high quality vineyards which results in a more seductive Chardonnay that is not fruity. The wine is rich and supple with a slight mineral finish and balanced with the minimal use of oak. Crab cakes are sublime with this wine.

2008 Bodega Barahonda Nabuko Monastrell/Syrah Yecla Spain - Rated 90 points by The Wine Advocate (Robert Parker), this Spanish beauty is made from50% Monastrell (Mourvedre) and 50% Syrah aged for three months in French oak. "Purple-colored, it reveals a fragrant nose of smoke, underbrush, blueberry, and blackberry jam. On the palate spice notes and black licorice emerge along with layers of savory blue fruit. Well balanced and lengthy, this seamless effort can be enjoyed over the next four years". Roasted lamb is a traditional Spanish dish which would perfect with this wine.
N.V. J. Bookwalter Subplot No. 23 Columbia Valley Washington - I am not sure why they decided to make a Non-Vintage table wine. This concept is usually applied to Champagne and sparkling wine. However, Bookwalter has made a luscious cuvee which is deep garnet in color with complex ripe, almost sweet aromas of molasses, violet and earth. It literally bursts onto the palate with ripe black cherry, softening to plum and blueberry. The finish is a bit spicy with a hint of chocolate. It was surprisingly balanced with excellent structure. It will open up in your glass after a few minutes. There is no good reason to decant this Syrah based blend. It was a great match for spicy beef stew on a cold night.
2005 Arthur Wilbanks Pinot Noir Edna Valley California - This cool weather Pinot is another victim of the recession. Made for restaurants, it should be significantly more expensive. It became available to us because restaurants are seen a drop of about 45% in wine sales. Made in a very food friendly style, it is smooth and elegant with flavors more like a Burgundy than a California Pinot. Soft smoky mushroom, dried fruit, subtle spice and just a touch of earthiness lead to a balanced finish. I had it with my favorite stanby, grilled salmon but it would also work very well with most poultry dishes.
2005 Kestrel Merlot Yakima Valley Washington - A little secret is that wine critics almost unanimously agree that Washington produces America's finest Merlots. I don't usually use winery descriptions but theirs is actually accurate In the aroma and on the palate there are multiple layers of ripe red fruits such as black cherry, blackberry, black raspberry, dried cranberry, black currant, elderberry, dried blueberry, and dried plum. There are also hints of dried herbs, rose petals, violets, sage, vanilla, clove cardamom, white pepper, nutmeg and tobacco. The wine is luscious, full bodied, complex, and boasts a lingering finish. 1,902 cases produced.
2002 Tamburlaine Members Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Orange New South Wales Australia - Tamburlaine doesn't make a big deal out of it but their wines are Certified Organic and have been for quite a while. This Cabernet, which finished third in its category out of almost 100 wines in the National Wine Show, shows how a wine benefits from proper aging. Medium to full-bodied, it has plum, cedar, licorice flavors and evolving tannins. Better balanced and not as one dimensional as many Australians. Serve this Cabernet with a lean cut of beef or buffalo.
2007 Bouchard Ainé & Fils Bourgogne Pinot Noir France - I have been selling this wonderful Bourgogne Rouge for at least 12-15 vintages. This current release is a perfect example why I have been such a fan. It is the equal of many Burgundies and California Pinots that are 20-50% more expensive. It gives you pure red fruit, kirsch, raspberry and slight truffle flavors. It gets about 10% oak aging which enhances the complexity and balance. The finish is elegant, clean and lingering. Go to the farmers market and get some quail, it is a match that is sublime.

2008 Fire Road Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough New Zealand - This Sauvignon is a restaurant favorite because it offers classic flavors at a great value. It has textbook Marlborough flavors of Gooseberry and passionfruit that are complimented by a nice honeysuckle note on the finish. The finish is surprisingly long and rewarding. This wine is perfect for moules frites.
2007 Lincourt Chardonnay Santa Barbara California - After tasting this wine I am at a loss as to why anyone would every buy Sonoma-Cutrer again. This is quintessential California Chardonnay. The predominant fruit flavors are mostly tropical with mango, papaya, coconut and peach. Although it was aged in French oak for 11 months the result is a great frame and not a splinter in your mouth. I did not want to like this wine but when I tasted it I was won over. It truly merits its Wine Spectator score of 91 points. It was a great match with sautéed scallops with fettuccine alfredo.
2007 Fonty's Pool Viognier Single Vineyard Pemberton Western Australia - James Halliday, Australia's leading wine critic, recently awarded Fonty's Pool a Five Star rating, his highest. This winery makes a superb Viognier that features a stylish aroma, with hints of pear, grapefruit and apricots. It shows richness without being flabby and yet has texture, with generous mouthfeel, a sense of crispness and added complexity from barrel maturation. Expressive, elegant and persistent. Enjoy it now, or let it improve and evolve over the next 2-3 years. Get take out from Surin of Thailand and just enjoy this beautiful wine.

Half-Case White
2008 Wirra Wirra "The Lost Watch" Riesling Adelaide Hills Australia - I would like to take a bit of credit for getting the Wirra Wirra wines back in the Georgia market. About 5 months ago the national sales manager contacted me about re-entering the market. They had been out for several years. Fortunately we have very good relationships with distributors and we were able to place Wirra Wirra with our friends at Continental Beverage. When you taste this handpicked Riesling you will understand our affinity. Perfectly balanced and retaining nice acidity, you will encounter evenly ripe flavors of lemons and limes enhanced by a bit of apple. It is a perfect match for shucked oysters with lime juice.
2008 Chateau Ducasse Blanc Bordeaux France - Imported by Kermit Lynch, this has been America's best selling Bordeaux Blanc for over a decade. It is a blend of 55% Semillon, 35% Sauvignon Blanc and 10% Muscadelle virtually all of which are "old vines". It has a nose that blends orange peel, citrus and a hint of minerality. The mouthfeel is clean and refreshing with melon, soft grapefruit and keylime. There is no noticeable oak. The perfect pairing is poached salmon.
2007 Claar Cellars Chardonnay White Bluffs Columbia Valley - This is a truly unique Chardonnay. There is no way to guess where it came from just by tasting it. It sees no oak and has a very beautiful mineral element that would seem to be Chablis. However, it is just a bit too ripe to be from that far north. The ripe citrus, green apple and lemon on mineral flavors makes this Chardonnay very elegant with a juicy acidity that makes the finish crisp, clean and food friendly. I offer the theory that this is what pure Chardonnay fruit from Washington should taste like. It is a great value! Serve it with grilled seabass and risotto.
